University of Nevada, Reno’s Mathewson Gateway District’s College of Business Building Achieves Significant Construction Milestone

On Wednesday, April 24, representatives from the University of Nevada, Reno, Edgemoor, design-builder Clark Construction, and designer LMN Architects celebrated the achievement of a major construction milestone – the University’s College of Business building structural topping out.

This major milestone commemorates the over 40,000 work hours that took place to date over the course of the project.

The five-story, 128,000 square-foot business building will provide a full range of spaces tailored to best practices in modern business education, including: a 300-seat auditorium, advanced technology labs, case-method optimized teaching spaces, a student commons, team meeting spaces and collaboration zones, faculty and administrative offices, a landscaped courtyard, outdoor plazas, and a mix of student and community outreach programs that foster entrepreneurship and innovation.

The project, as part of the greater Mathewson Gateway District, will create a physical link between the University and downtown Reno and catalyze growth for the region.

The new building officially broke ground in October 2023. Over the past six months, the project team has:

  • Placed 3,800 cubic yards for concrete foundations,
  • Poured 1,300 cubic yards of concrete for vertical cores,
  • Erected 900 tons of structural steel, and
  • Installed 130,000 square feet of metal decking.

With a focus on local workforce engagement, more than 70% of the project value is contracted to Northern Nevada trade partners, and a total of 23 Northern Nevada subcontractors are engaged in the project.

The project is scheduled to open in July 2025.

"We are privileged to have an opportunity to contribute to making the new College of Business a landmark in the Northern Nevada community and creating a better tomorrow for generations,” said Edgemoor Managing Director Donald Gibson. “The topping out marks the progress along the journey and celebrates the people working in the field making this significant project a reality. We offer our thanks and appreciation for everyone’s contributions towards the realization of the first academic building in the Mathewson Gateway District.”
